The money: Rs 4,000 a year, paid once
You get Rs 4,000 per financial year as a consolidated academic allowance. This is not paid monthly. The guidelines do not specify when during the year the amount reaches your account, but the state government is required to disburse it through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to your bank account once your application is verified.
The amount covers the full year of study—from admission to the end of that academic year. If you are in Class IX in 2026–27, you receive Rs 4,000 for that year. If you are promoted to Class X, you apply again and receive another Rs 4,000.
Who qualifies
Caste and category
You must belong to one of three categories:
- Other Backward Class (OBC) as notified by the government of Himachal Pradesh
- Economically Backward Class (EBC)
- Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes (DNT)
You need a valid caste certificate issued by the competent authority in your state. The certificate must be current at the time of application.
Income ceiling
Your family's total annual income from all sources must not exceed Rs 2,50,000. This includes salary, agricultural income, business profit, rent, and any other earnings. One income certificate covers you for the entire duration of your course—so if you apply in Class IX, the certificate issued at that time is valid when you renew in Class X. You do not need a fresh certificate every year.
School and class
You must be studying in Class IX or Class X on a full-time basis in a government school only. Private schools are not covered. The school must be in India.
Domicile
You must belong to Himachal Pradesh—that is, you must be domiciled in the state. The scholarship is awarded by the state government to which you belong, not the state where your school is located.
No double scholarship
If you are already receiving another educational scholarship for Class IX or X, you cannot hold both. If you have been awarded a different scholarship, you must choose one and inform your school which one you are taking. Once you choose, the other scholarship stops.
Documents you will need
Prepare these before you open the application form:
- Aadhaar number or Aadhaar e-ID (mandatory for authentication on the portal)
- Caste certificate issued by the district administration or competent authority
- Income certificate from the current financial year, issued by the appropriate authority
- School admission proof or enrollment document
- Bank account details (account number, IFSC code, bank name)
- Passport-size photograph
If Aadhaar authentication fails for any reason, the guidelines allow you to establish your identity through other means—so do not assume you are ineligible if your Aadhaar has a problem. Inform your school or the state authorities and they will help you verify yourself another way.
The income certificate must be from the current financial year (April 2026 to March 2027 for applications in June–August 2026). An old certificate will not be accepted.
How to apply
All applications go through the National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in. Paper applications are not accepted.

The portal stays open for nearly three months. Do not wait until August to apply—the portal typically slows down in the final weeks, and if there is any issue with your documents, you will have no time to fix it.
Steps to apply
- Visit scholarships.gov.in and register with your Aadhaar number.
- Fill in your personal, family, and school details.
- Upload scanned copies of your caste certificate, income certificate, and any other required documents.
- Enter your bank account number and IFSC code.
- Submit the form.
- Your school will receive a notification to verify your enrollment and details. This must happen by 31 July.
- The state government will verify your application by 15 August.
- If approved, the payment is processed and reaches your bank account by 30 September.
The state government may ask for additional documents or clarification after you submit. Check your email and the portal regularly. If your school or the state needs something from you, respond within the time they give you.
What happens if you are approved
Once your application is verified and approved, the scholarship amount is transferred directly to your bank account through DBT. You do not collect it from school or go anywhere to claim it. The money lands in the account you provided.
Keep your bank account active and linked to your Aadhaar. If you change banks or close your account, inform your school immediately so the state can update your details.
Renewing in the next year
If you are promoted to Class X, you are eligible to renew your scholarship for that year. Renewal is automatic based on your attendance and your school's confirmation that you have been promoted and have returned to study.
You must maintain at least 75% attendance in the previous year to qualify for renewal. Attendance is verified through an Aadhaar-based system at your school.
If you were absent due to illness, you can apply for renewal with a medical certificate from a prescribed authority, and your school will decide whether to accept it.
You do not need to submit a fresh income certificate if your course is continuing into the next year. The one you provided at admission remains valid.
Reasons your application might be rejected
- Income exceeds Rs 2,50,000 per annum
- You are studying in a private school (only government schools are eligible)
- You do not belong to OBC, EBC, or DNT category, or your caste certificate is invalid
- You are already receiving another scholarship for the same class
- Your Aadhaar cannot be authenticated and you do not provide an alternative form of identification
- Your attendance falls below 75% in the previous year (for renewal)
- You are studying in Class XI or XII (this scheme covers only Class IX and X)
- You do not provide a valid bank account or your account details are incorrect
If your application is rejected, the state will notify you through the portal. You can then contact your school's grievance officer or the district-level authority to ask why and whether you can reapply with corrected documents.
If your scholarship is cancelled
The state can suspend or cancel your scholarship if you violate school discipline or breach the terms of the scheme. If you are found to have obtained the scholarship by submitting false information, it will be cancelled immediately and you will be asked to return the money. You will also be blacklisted and barred from receiving any government scholarship in the future.
Do not submit false documents or incorrect information about your family income or caste. The consequences are permanent.
Grievances and support
The National Scholarship Portal has an online grievance system. If your application is delayed, your payment does not arrive, or you have a problem with verification, you can lodge a complaint on the portal. Every school has a Grievance Redressal Officer (GRO) who is responsible for resolving issues. If your school does not resolve it within a reasonable time, your complaint is escalated to the district and then to the state level.
Contact your school's GRO first. They have the authority to follow up with the state on your behalf.
Key dates and reminders
The application window is 4 June to 31 August 2026. Your school must verify you by 31 July, and the state must verify by 15 August. Money reaches your account by 30 September at the latest.
Apply early. Do not assume you have until August 31. If there is an error in your documents, you need time to correct it. Many students lose scholarships because they apply in the last week and have no time to fix a rejected application.
Check the National Scholarship Portal regularly for updates and announcements from the state government. The state may issue clarifications or extend deadlines, and you will see them there first.
