Who can apply
You're eligible if you're a boy domiciled in Himachal Pradesh and currently enrolled in a Sainik School anywhere in India. The scheme doesn't specify an age limit or academic performance requirement in the guidelines—what matters is that you're actually studying there.
The scholarship is not means-tested. The government guidelines don't mention an income ceiling, which means in theory a student from any economic background can apply. This is unusual for state welfare schemes and worth confirming with your school's principal before you start the form.

Understanding the income certificate

Domicile and residency
The form will ask you to confirm you're a resident of Himachal Pradesh. You'll need to upload a proof document. This can be a domicile certificate issued by the revenue office, a utility bill in your parent's name, or a school transfer certificate showing HP as your native state. School and enrollment details
Enter the name of the Sainik School you're studying in, your admission date, and your current class. Upload a copy of your admission letter or a letter from the school confirming your enrollment. The school's letterhead and principal's signature matter—a casual note won't be accepted.
Income information
This section asks for your family's monthly or annual income. Enter the figure that matches your income certificate. If the certificate says annual income, convert it to monthly by dividing by 12. If you enter a different figure than what's on the certificate, the verification stage will flag it and your application will be rejected.
Attach the income certificate as a PDF or image file. Make sure it's readable—blurry or cut-off documents cause rejection.
Bank account details
Provide the account number, IFSC code, and bank name where the scholarship should be deposited. The account can be in your name or your parent's name. Double-check the IFSC code—a wrong code means the money won't reach you, and you'll have to reapply.
After you submit
The form goes to your school's principal first. The principal verifies that you're actually enrolled there and that the information you provided matches their records. This step usually takes 1–2 weeks.
Once the principal approves, the application moves to the District Education Officer. The DEO checks your domicile and income certificate against revenue records. This can take another 2–3 weeks.
Finally, the application reaches the Director of Higher Education in Shimla, who makes the final decision. You'll get a notification on the portal when the decision is made.
The entire process typically takes 6–8 weeks from submission to approval. Don't apply in late August expecting a quick result—the portal closes on 31 August 2026, and processing continues after that.
Why applications get rejected
- Income certificate is from the wrong financial year
- Income figure on the form doesn't match the certificate
- School enrollment cannot be verified (the principal didn't respond or the school has no record of you)
- Domicile certificate is missing or not accepted by the revenue office
- Bank account details are incorrect or the account is not in your name or a parent's name
- Documents are illegible or incomplete (pages missing from a multi-page certificate)
- You're not actually studying in a Sainik School at the time of application
If your application is rejected, the portal will show a reason. You can then reapply with corrected documents, but only if the application window is still open. Once 31 August 2026 passes, you'll have to wait for the next cycle.

Things to do before you apply

After you're approved
The scholarship is credited to your bank account once per year. The exact date depends on when the Director of Higher Education releases the funds, which is usually by November or December.
You don't have to reapply every year if you remain enrolled in the school. The scholarship continues automatically as long as you're a student there. If you leave the school or discontinue your studies, you must inform the Director of Higher Education in writing.
The guidelines note that if you're removed from the school for misconduct or fail to appear in the annual examination, the scholarship will be suspended for that year.
