Nalanda University was located in Nalanda district of Bihar. It was founded in the 5th century CE and was one of the most prestigious centers of learning in ancient India, attracting scholars from across Asia.
Bihar was established as a separate administrative unit in 1911 when it was separated from Bengal Presidency. This administrative reorganization created the province of Bihar and Orissa.
