Virtual work method applies imaginary (virtual) displacements to calculate real deflections and support reactions in statically determinate and indeterminate structures.
For a cantilever beam, maximum bending moment always occurs at the fixed support where the reaction moment is maximum. BM = W × L = 20 × 5 = 100 kN-m at fixed end.
FEM (Fixed End Moment) are moments developed in a member if both ends are fixed against rotation.
For cantilever, maximum BM = wL²/2 occurs at fixed end where slope and deflection are also maximum.
Section should pass through maximum 3 members to solve for unknowns using 3 equilibrium equations (ΣFx, ΣFy, ΣM).
A determinate structure has exactly as many unknowns as equilibrium equations, allowing unique solution without material properties.
